BT has teamed with alternative telecoms provider THUS to extend the high-speed internet to three of Scotland's main island groups, to allow about a third of the population of the Western Isles, Orkney and Shetland to access broadband. The three areas will become the first of Scotland's offshore territories to benefit from broadband, with more than 13,000 businesses immediately able to upgrade their connections. In a move that turns the tables on the usual relationship between BT and its partners, BT will lease capacity from THUS's wireless links to the islands, so as to hook them up to its mainland broadband network. The "milestone" launch is expected to occur next spring. BT said it signals "our determination to bring coverage to the most remote parts of Scotland".
