The network operator, a joint venture between Virgin Group and T-Mobile, added some 231,500 customers during the months of April, May and June, taking its overall user base to 2.87m. It had 2.4m customers at the beginning of the year.
It indicated in January that it wanted 3m subscribers by the end of 2003 and now looks set to beat expectations, following the introduction of a 3p text tariff that has attracted new customers and retained existing ones.
Virgin also revealed better than expected financial data. The company has generated an EBITDA profit of £42m during the first-half of 2003, against the £16m it earned at the same level for the whole of 2002. Virgin said turnover during the second-quarter has exceeded £100m.
The operator has increased customer numbers by more than 60% in a year.
