Vecta has been established as part of the BBC's response to the government, which has asked the corporation to find new ways of raising money. The BBC expects Vecta to contribute a "significant" proportion of the £1.1bn target it has been set for 2005.
Vecta, part of BBC Ventures, will set up new businesses to exploit technologies developed by the BBC's research and development unit, in conjunction with third party companies.
It has a target of establishing 12 businesses - the first has already been launched and will provide wireless broadcast products to the media and entertainment industries, including a wireless digital radio camera for broadcast that has already been put through its paces within the BBC.
The company is also looking closely at digital radio and other products that are aimed at the entertainment sector, either from a consumer or trade angle.
