Facebook drops app support for Blackberry phones

Facebook has dropped support for BlackBerry phones, leaving users unable to connect to the social network through apps.

The move means Blackberry users will have to use the mobile version of the website to log on to the social network.

In February, Facebook-owned WhatsApp also announced that it would only continue to support Blackberry’s Android-powered Priv handset.

Whatsapp support for Blackberry’s own operating system will end at the end of 2016, the firm said.

“We fought back to work with WhatsApp and Facebook to change their minds, but at this time, their decision stands,” wrote Lou Gazzola, who works in developer relations at Blackberry, in a blog post.

“We have worked hard to ensure our end users have the best experience in light of this decision, and are continuing to search for alternate solutions.”

BlackBerry said that it was “extremely disappointed” in Facebook’s decision, because “we know so many users love these apps”

The company will allow BlackBerry users to access Facebook by giving them a simple app that allows it to get to Facebook through the web. But they won’t be able to use any of the more advanced features of the app and likely won’t receive updates in the future.
