Amazon has updated its MP3 download app to work on iPhone and iPod Touch devices, letting Apple users buy music from Amazon’s digital store for the first time.
Steve Boom, vice president of Amazon Music, says that since the launch of the Cloud Player app for the iPhone and iPod Touch, customers have been asking for the ability to buy music from Amazon directly from their devices.
Amazon said its mp3 library has 22 million songs available.
The Apple users can browse Amazon’s MP3 store for music using Apple’s Safari web browser.
Music that users buy gets saved to their Amazon Cloud Player libraries and can be downloaded or played instantly from Apple devices or other gadgets such as the Kindle Fire.
The move signals Amazon is focusing more heavily on its music business, especially when combined with the last week’s unveiling of “AutoRip,” which provides some free digital copies of music with the purchase of CDs, earlier this month.
Amazon has also managed to get around Apple’s standard fee for developers, which dictates that the firm gets a 30 percent cut of app sales and in-app purchases.
