Facebook turns profile photos into videos

Social networking giant Facebook is letting users put up videos as their profile pictures. The looping videos appear smack in the middle of the profile page (rather than on the left as before).

The size of the photo or video is now bigger, and there’s a new place to add a short, public bio right below the profile photo.

Users can also set their profile picture temporarily, meaning they can set a timer on a photo or video so it only displays for a set period of time, like while doing a charity fundraiser, for example.

“The world has changed since we first introduced profiles in 2004. On News Feed and profiles, we’re seeing people create and view more videos than ever before. Today we’re starting to test the next step in an obvious evolution of profiles: profile videos,” Facebook Product Managers Aigerim Shorman and Tony Hsieh wrote in a blog post.

Facebook, which has over one billion users globally, has started testing the new feature to a small number of iPhone users in UK and California and will roll them out to more people soon, the blog added.

According to the company, users collectively visit Facebook profiles over four billion times in a day.

“We’re moving your profile picture and video to literally put you front-and-centre on your profile. Profile pictures are now centered, and we’ve made them bigger to give you more real estate to show off what you can do with our new creative tools,” the blog said.
