Web users from the UK are more concerned with online safety than users from any other country, according to a study published today by Internet security firm G Data.
The international report entitled “How do users assess threats on the Internet?” reveals that of all countries asked, the UK is the most concerned with safety with over 94 percent of UK web users having a security solution installed on their machine.
This compares with 83% of users in Russia, who are the least concerned with online safety.
Dr Grainne Kirwan, Lecturer in Cyberpsychology at Dun Laoghaire Institute of Art, Design and Technology comments: “The finding is very interesting, and could perhaps be explained in part by factors which researchers have found to be related to the intention to practice online security. These factors include the perceived usefulness of the security software (i.e. how effective the user thinks the software will be), influences from family, peers and the mass media (so if users hear a lot about the importance of online security measures and the dangers of poor protection by these sources, then they’re more likely to take suitable precautions).
“Finally, self-efficacy is also important – the user needs to feel that they have the appropriate skills and knowledge to install and run the right online protection instruments.” She continues “It would seem that UK Internet users have the right combination of these factors, which is a very positive thing for improving their online security.”
The study, which investigated and analysed the behavior of almost 16,000 web users in 11 countries, was conducted by G Data as part of its ongoing commitment to providing security solutions that reassure web users and allow them to enjoy the benefits of the internet without hindrance.
As well as being the most concerned with safety, UK web users are also the most likely to use a full security solution, rather than just anti-virus like many other countries. 65% of UK respondents claimed to have a full suite protection, this compares again to users in Russia, where just 40% of respondents claimed to have a full solution.
“In the case of Internet security, a healthy dose of paranoia can be a good thing; the rest of the world can learn a lot from the UK in this respect. Web users need to ensure they are careful for the correct reasons and continue to be aware of the risks associated with the Internet.” says James Coombes of G Data. “Every day we see reports about new attacks on Internet users, data theft, new computer malware and the formation of cyber-criminals. Therefore, it is even more important than ever for users to ensure they have the correct security solution.”
