Brits ‘spend nearly one day a month online’

The average Briton spends 65 per cent more time online each month than they did three years ago, equating to nearly a whole day online each month, according to new research.

The survey, by the UK Online Measurement company (UKOM), revealed that the average Brit now spends 22 hours and 15 minutes online each month.

The research suggests that the rise in time spent online is down to the popularity of social networking sites such as Facebook, which now account for 23 per cent of time spent online.

UKOM also reported a fall in the time users spent instant messaging. This went down from 14 per cent of online time in 2007, to just five per cent in 2010.

Despite predictions that it would suffer, the use of e-mail has actually increased, up from 6.5 per cent three years ago to 7.2 per cent.

Other popular site types including coupons and rewards, which saw use grow by 516 per cent, and food and cooking, which grew by 363 per cent. Online gaming rose to  6.9 per cent.

Brits spent 884 million hours online in April 2010, two-thirds as much as they did in April 2007, and are spending that time in different ways, the firm explained.

Twitter is now a 'destination website' and that means it is gunning for Facebook, but cleverly avoiding a direct dogfight. It’s more an information network than a social network and so is offering much, much more. Tanya Goodin, CEO of search and social conversion agency Tamar comments…
