UK-based music streaming site, we7 and radio station owner GMG Radio, have today announced a new partnership , to offer a digital, on-demand entertainment service combined with real-time, integrated breaking news.

The industry first allows consumers to access the best of digital and traditional media simultaneously, offering personal music choice from we7 and breaking news from GMG Radio’s Real Radio brand.

Owned by the Guardian Media Group and boasting an enviable reputation for high quality award-winning news programming, GMG Radio will provide regular news updates to we7’s three million UK users, bringing a new offering to the industry and shaping a new norm for the future.

This partnership means that consumers listening to digital music will hear breaking news alerts at certain intervals between tracks.

The announcement follows news that we7 is the first music streaming service to make the ad-funded business model add up and proves its commitment and focus on innovation to change the industry.

CEO and co-founder of we7, Steve Purdham, explains: “This partnership marries high quality news production and delivery with the new paradigm of On-demand music.  Radio and Cloud based music can learn a great deal from each other, so we are really excited about working with GMG Radio”

The partnership hopes to reach both existing listeners of digital radio services, who demand more, but also serve to introduce both we7 and GMG Radio to a raft of new potential users.

Stuart Taylor, Chief Executive of GMG Radio comments: “Working with we7 means that we can continue to grow our strong reputation for quality news coverage by making that content available across a variety of platforms for the benefit of the end user.  We’re thrilled to be providing news  for  listeners in this format, it’s not only changing the offering to the consumers but shows the real evolution of the market.”

Twitter is now a 'destination website' and that means it is gunning for Facebook, but cleverly avoiding a direct dogfight. It’s more an information network than a social network and so is offering much, much more. Tanya Goodin, CEO of search and social conversion agency Tamar comments…
