Carphone Warehouse phases out Tiscali brand name in UK

Carphone Warehouse is to drop the Tiscali name for its broadband service following its purchase of the company back in may last year.

The move will see Carphone’s Talk Talk brand replace all Tiscali services.

Carphone Warehouse paid £236m for Tiscali UK, making TalkTalk the largest ISP in the country, with 4.25 million residential customers.

Tiscali UK's business customers are now subscribers to Opal, Carphone Warehouse's business ISP.

"Today we welcome all Tiscali customers to TalkTalk and open the doors to a new portal", says CPW boss Charles Dunstone in a company blog post.

"From today the Tiscali brand is no more and we're committed to giving all of our customers absolute clarity about who we are, the services we provide and the prices we charge".

If they haven't already, Tiscali customers will now be moved over to TalkTalk tariffs. "For many of our customers this will mean a reduction in their monthly bills, others will see no change with the remainder getting a small increase", says Dunstone.

TalkTalk will be demerged from Carphone Warehouse in the coming months, in order to create a clear separation between the ISP and Carphone Warehouse's handset business, which will be known as Best Buy Europe.

Italy-based Tiscali had been a major player in UK internet provision since 2001, when it bought the ISP LineOne for €100m (£62.5m at the time).

Twitter is now a 'destination website' and that means it is gunning for Facebook, but cleverly avoiding a direct dogfight. It’s more an information network than a social network and so is offering much, much more. Tanya Goodin, CEO of search and social conversion agency Tamar comments…

Guest comment: No rival to the SMS text exists in the market today
SMS is the obvious “lowest common denominator” mobile marketing solution... yet critics still talk about apps and website and vouchers. Darren Daws, Managing Director at Txtlocal argues why SMS is still the best mobile marketing medium, even on smartphones.
