Apple's iTunes Store has sold its 10 billionth song, less than 7 years after first going online with a library of little over 200,000 tracks. The store now offers more than 12m songs, making it by far the biggest song catalogue in the world.

The 10 billion milestone was reached around 5pm in the US on the 24th February (the same day as Steve Jobs's 55th birthday) when iTunes customer Louie Sulcer downloaded "Guess Things Happen That Way" by Johnny Cash. As a result Louie has won a $10,000 iTunes gift card in Apple's Countdown to 10 Billion Songs promotion.
iTunes now accounts for 70% of global online digital music sales, making it the world's largest legal music retailer. According to analyst estimates from Piper Jaffray the iTunes Store generated revenues of $520m (£340m) in the last financial quarter.
