Global spending on online advertising is expected to rise by 12 per cent this year, according to a report by marketing research firm EMarketer.
Spending will hit $61.8bn in 2010, according to the report. The internet is giving stiff competition to television as the place to find audiences, it said.
"The recession has propelled online advertising by forcing marketers with limited budgets to make every dollar count," said eMarketer analyst Jared Jenks.
Online ad spending is expected to rise to $96.8bn in 2014 with an 11.9 per cent compounded annual rate of increase. EMarketer expects a 3.8 per cent increase this year in total ad spending for all media worldwide to $482.6bn.
The research firm also said the total ad spend will not return to 2008 levels until 2012. The firm forecasts that the total spend on advertising will be $564bn in 2014.
