Britain’s domain name .uk still popular after 25 years

With the .uk domain name entering its 25th year, Britain’s country code top-level domain (ccTLD) is as still great value and one of the most popular extensions traded on the domain market, according to new research.

The findings, from Sedo, an online domain marketplace and monetisation provider, comes from its Q2 2010 Domain Market Study, revealing domain industry trends and changes, based on Sedo’s marketplace.

The average sales price for a .co.uk domain name is £1,338 and the median reported sales price of all .co.uk’s is £348. .co.uk domains are currently the second most traded ccTLD, behind Germany’s .de extension.

The Sedo marketplace also saw new TLDs appearing in the top domain name sales of the quarter. Domain names including Tvs.co.uk, Join.me and Business.tv contributed to one of the ‘most well rounded’ Top 20 lists to date.

It is suspected that this new trend may be attributed to the increase in small businesses looking to target more local visitors and to the increase in media coverage surrounding TLDs like .me and .tv, which work well for bringing marketing and branding strategies online.

Highlights of Sedo’s Q2 2010 study include:

·          A total of 11,146 domains sold on the Sedo global marketplace during the quarter, accounting for £14,471,402 in transactions, showing a steady rise in domain sales for four quarters in a row

·          Despite the introduction of new domain names extensions, .com remains the most popular extension, accounting for more than 46 percent of all sales on the Sedo marketplace and 74 percent of all generic TLD sales. The average price of a .com domain is £1,757

·          Among ccTLDs, the .de extension remained the most popular, accounting for 64 percent of ccTLDs sold.  The .co.uk and .eu extensions  both took second place, each representing 15 percent of sales on the marketplace

·          The three most popular domain categories of the quarter are software, regions (e.g. countries and cities) and employment

·          The most expensive .com domain name of the quarter was Cgm.com for £233,733, followed by Software.de for  £196,715 and Kredit.com for £184,147. The most expensive .co.uk ccTLD, TVs.co.uk, was sold for £51,000

·          Offer-Counteroffer sales are the most prominent sales type. Selling fixed price domains has become the second most popular, due to the increased usage of Sedo.com’s “Buy it Now” option

“The results of the report show that the .uk space and the domain name industry is in good health, with domains readily available at reasonable prices. While the economy is still emerging from the downturn, the domain market place continues to show positive growth, revealing a strong and steady domain market that is being consistently integrated into digital strategy,” said Hugo Dalrymple-Smith, Director of UK Operations, Sedo. “Companies and individuals across the globe are now looking at domain names as a critical component to the success of their marketing campaigns.”
