Scholastic Children’s Books has partnered with social-media company Yomego to launch a Horrible Histories virtual world for children next year.

Based on the popular series of history books for children, the online world will feature a series of ‘rooms’ based on key historical periods, including Rotten Rome, Awesome Egypt and Terrible Tudor London.

When they enter the world, children will create an avatar of their choice. They are then free to explore each world, discover the ‘nasty bits’ of history within them, and ‘meet’ and chat to other avatars.

Development plans also include an online virtual goods shop, a fully moderated chat feature, and special events where subscribers can meet author Terry Deary, or even a virtual Henry VIII. In a 2.5D world, anything is possible.

Lisa Edwards, Publishing and Commercial Director of Scholastic Children’s Books said: “We have been tracking the popularity of virtual worlds for children for some time now. Of course, this is dominated by the hugely popular Habbo Hotel and for younger users, Club Penguin.

“The Horrible Histories virtual world will offer children the opportunity to experience their favourite brand at a whole new interactive level and it is the first time a book property has offered in this way. Of course, as well as being an entertaining experience, our primary concern is giving parents and teachers confidence in the world as a safe place to leave children to play.”

Steve Richards, MD of Glasgow-based Yomego said, “Virtual worlds have seen phenomenal growth in recent times, especially with younger audiences. Brands like Lego and Barbie are beginning to explore this area and our technology now makes it an affordable option for brands to build long-lasting relationships with consumers. Working on the Horrible Histories brand is a dream come true for me and the Yomego team working on the project. We’re all fans of the books and TV show and it will be a pleasure bringing the virtual world version to life.”

The Horrible Histories virtual world is planned to go live in June 2011.

Right to reply: The New Twitter – a sticky, revenue-rich service that blitzes the third-party apps
Twitter is now a 'destination website' and that means it is gunning for Facebook, but cleverly avoiding a direct dogfight. It’s more an information network than a social network and so is offering much, much more. Tanya Goodin, CEO of search and social conversion agency Tamar comments…

Right to reply: ‘Instant Search’– Google giveth then taketh away
Google has just announced its “streaming search” service, Google Instant, is coming out of limited Beta testing and going live for all users. Guest comment: No rival to the SMS text exists in the market today
SMS is the obvious “lowest common denominator” mobile marketing solution... yet critics still talk about apps and website and vouchers. Darren Daws, Managing Director at Txtlocal argues why SMS is still the best mobile marketing medium, even on smartphones.
