iPhone app to let users watch ‘almost live’ TV

UK online video firm TVCatchup has launched an iPhone app that lets users watch nearly live TV shows, including some BBC content.

TVCatchup courted controversy when it launched last year  offering a free program recording service, which it was then forced to suspend after its hosting was terminated by its ISP.

The new app, at iphone.tvcatchup.com, lets iPhone users watch live UK television, albeit with a delay of about a minute, from their handset.

The app gives users free access to more than 40 channels via 3G and Wi-Fi.

The app is set to launch before Christmas, and will be supported by pre-roll video ads managed by sales network 24/7 Real Media and .Fox Networks.

The firm has also revamped its website, letting viewers record programmes from the BBC, ITV, Channel 4, Five and Sky on their PC.

Daniel Williams, co-founder of TVCatchup, said: “TVCatchup was started primarily to meet the needs of those unable to access digital TV. We want to become the prime destination for people to consume live digital TV online and are helping them to exercise their right to record.”

Twitter is now a 'destination website' and that means it is gunning for Facebook, but cleverly avoiding a direct dogfight. It’s more an information network than a social network and so is offering much, much more. Tanya Goodin, CEO of search and social conversion agency Tamar comments…

Guest comment: No rival to the SMS text exists in the market today
SMS is the obvious “lowest common denominator” mobile marketing solution... yet critics still talk about apps and website and vouchers. Darren Daws, Managing Director at Txtlocal argues why SMS is still the best mobile marketing medium, even on smartphones.
