DMGT have announced that the London Lite will be closing, with at least 36 members of staff losing their jobs.
The news comes two weeks after the London Evening Standard, which Associated's parent company Daily Mail & General Trust has a minority stake in, went free.It is also just a month since News International's rival freesheet, the London Paper, closed.
"The latest development in the London afternoon free newspaper space dictates that we look again at the future of London Lite," said Steve Auckland, the managing director of Associated Newspapers' free division in a report in The Guardian
"Despite reaching a large audience with an excellent editorial format, we are concerned about the commercial viability in this highly competitive area," Auckland added.
The Evening Standard is now thought to be reviewing its ‘free status’ as it is the only newspaper left to rival the Metro in London given out free to commuters in London.
