Travel Buddy debuts location-based mobile tool

Travel Buddy has launched its new ‘Mobile Destination Guides’ that provide personalised, location based services for holidaymakers and business travellers.

The new mobile web site services have been created using Wapple Architect, allowing applications from local weather, travel and the latest ‘what’s on’ information, to news and favourite sports results from back home, to be optimised and delivered to any mobile device.

“Travel Buddy already provides a wide range of interactive travel services using SMS text messaging, but the mobile internet allows us to offer ‘Mobile Destination Guides’ with much more feature rich, multimedia information specific to an individual person and their destination. It also provides airlines with a new platform to up-sell services in destination,” said Jason Rivolta, Commercial Director of Travel Buddy.

“The problem we faced was supporting over 50,000 mobile device and software variations; but with Wapple Architect we only had to create the application and content once so now it will automatically work and be displayed correctly on any phone or other mobile device.”

Travel Buddy can be used by travel agents, TMCs and tour operators, in addition to airlines and tourist authorities to build relationships with their customers and visitors.

“Travel Buddy is a great illustration of how Wapple Architect can help companies to harness the full power of the mobile web to mobilise existing applications and develop new content,” says Anne Thomas, Chief Operating Officer at Wapple. “Wapple Architect and Wapple Exhibit make sure that users always get the very best experience possible on their phones while brands know that their logos and other images will never be distorted or in the wrong colour, and that only features and functionality the device is able to handle will be delivered. This means that developers can focus on innovating and creating exciting new mobile applications.”

Right to reply: The New Twitter – a sticky, revenue-rich service that blitzes the third-party apps
Twitter is now a 'destination website' and that means it is gunning for Facebook, but cleverly avoiding a direct dogfight. It’s more an information network than a social network and so is offering much, much more. Tanya Goodin, CEO of search and social conversion agency Tamar comments…

Right to reply: ‘Instant Search’– Google giveth then taketh away
Google has just announced its “streaming search” service, Google Instant, is coming out of limited Beta testing and going live for all users. According to Adam Bunn, Head of Search at leading independent search and social marketing agency Greenlight, when it comes to search engine optimisation campaigns (SEO), some websites may now suffer a drop in traffic.

Guest comment: No rival to the SMS text exists in the market today
SMS is the obvious “lowest common denominator” mobile marketing solution... yet critics still talk about apps and website and vouchers. Darren Daws, Managing Director at Txtlocal argues why SMS is still the best mobile marketing medium, even on smartphones.
