Facebook ‘twice as big as MySpace’

Added:
Jan 28, 2009

Facebook had nearly twice as many global visitors in December 2008 than former social networking leader MySpace, according to online research firm ComScore.

Facebook had almost 222 million unique visitors last month, while MySpace had 125 million. This  marks a major change from April of 2008, when both firms were closely matched in terms of users.

Commenting on the figures, Andrew Lipsman, director of industry analysis at ComScore, said: "The trend isn't new in terms of Facebook's phenomenal growth. It's doubled its number of visitors in the past year."

However, while Facebook holds a sizeable lead worldwide, MySpace still leads the way in the US.

Lipsman noted that Facebook has about 55 million American users every month, while MySpace has 75.9 million a month.

Around two-thirds of MySpace users are based in the US, compared with only a quarter of Facebook's users.

The figures also put Facebook ahead of online marketplace in terms if UK users. eBay drew in 20.5 million visitors in Demcember 2008, compared with Facebook’s 21.2 million.

Facebook is currently the fourth most popular property in the UK,  behind only the groups of sites owned by Google, Microsoft, and Yahoo.

Yahoo sites saw just 22.4 million unique visitors in December.
