Amazon profits defy crunch

Amazon has seen its profits rise 9% in the last quarter of 2008, as the online retail giant enjoyed a bumper Christmas despite global economic turmoil.
The company posted net profits of $225m (about £157m) in the fourth quarter of last year, up from $207 in 2007.
Last year Mamma Mia was the top-selling item on Amazon, followed by The Tales of Beedle the Bard by JK Rowling.
The Dark Knight and Nintendo Wii Console and Mario Kart with Wii Wheel made up the top five sellers on Amazon.co.uk
