Faber lets readers ‘pay what they like’ for new book

Faber and Faber have become the first publishers to sell a new title online at a ‘pay what you like’ rate.

What Price Liberty? by Ben Wilson is the first book to be sold in this way.

From now until the physical publication on June 4th users will be able to download a pdf or epub version of the book from www.whatpriceliberty.co.uk  giving them the freedom to pay whatever price they choose for the book.

As well as making the book widely available and accessible, such a campaign also draws attention to the core issue at the heart of the book and Ben Wilson’s debate- that in order for liberty to survive we must all agree upon the value we place upon it.   What price would you pay for liberty?

www.whatpriceliberty.co.uk  will be the hub of a series of discussions about the nature of Liberty- both historic and contemporary, with a far reaching marketing and PR campaign to fuel the debate, which will be opened up to everyone from student organisations, to politicians, to civil rights groups.

Ben Wilson will be regularly blogging about issues of Liberty in the news and current affairs, and users can use the 'ShareThis' link on the website, to mention it on Twitter/Facebook/Delicious amongst others.

The website will also be regularly updated with video clips of Ben Wilson interviewing authors such as Andy Beckett, Petina Gappah, and members of the public, about their views on Liberty.

'Given the nature of the book, its title and subject matter, there's a great deal of sense in attaching this particular promotion' says Henry Volans, the head of digital publishing at Faber and Faber. In some senses, the ideas of the book are far grander than the question of what someone is happy to pay for an e-book, but there is a natural synergy'

'One of the things that we are keen to stress is that this project does not mean that we think that all e-books should be free or extremely cheap. We are being open that this promotion is a way of drawing attention to the book, he says. We are open minded about it and hope it's a raging success'

What Price Liberty? is available to download from www.whatpriceliberty.co.uk from Monday 27th April 2009 and will published as a Trade Paperback on 2nd June 2009, £14.99.

Right to reply: The New Twitter – a sticky, revenue-rich service that blitzes the third-party apps
Twitter is now a 'destination website' and that means it is gunning for Facebook, but cleverly avoiding a direct dogfight. It’s more an information network than a social network and so is offering much, much more. Tanya Goodin, CEO of search and social conversion agency Tamar comments…

Guest comment: No rival to the SMS text exists in the market today
SMS is the obvious “lowest common denominator” mobile marketing solution... yet critics still talk about apps and website and vouchers. Darren Daws, Managing Director at Txtlocal argues why SMS is still the best mobile marketing medium, even on smartphones.
