Google has expanded its AdSense contextual ad system to its online mapping service, as the search giant looks to monetize more of its content.
The ads appear at the foot of each map in text form, and are designed to be geographically relevant to each search. The text links take users out of Google Maps to the advertiser websites.
The move follows news earlier this week that Google was launching its much-anticipated ‘AdSense for Games’, alongside retail links in YouTube videos.
The beta version of AdSense for Games will see relevant advertising from Google’s network placed in Web-based games.
The ads will appear in videos that players watch before or after a game, or after completing a level.
Google bought Adscape Media, a small in-game advertising company, in early 2007, less than a year after Microsoft Corp. bought in-game ad company Massive Inc.
