Sony has teamed up with internet phone company Skype to create a service that lets PlayStation Portable (PSP) owners make phone calls over the internet using Skype.
Sony said it would release a software update at the end of January that would enable PSP users to make Voice over IP calls over Skype.
Skype allows calls to be made over the internet for free to other users of the software, but there is a charge when making or receiving calls to and from landlines and mobile phones.
However, the service will only be available on PSP devices released after September 2007.
To use the service PSP owners will need a Memory Stick Duo, a wireless internet connection and a Skype compatible audio input device.
Last year Sony announced an agreement with British Telecom to bring instant messaging services to PSP users in the UK, and a spokesperson for Sony said the Skype deal would “complement” this.
