Musicians ‘most popular figures online’

Added:
Jan 28, 2008

Musicians are generating the biggest buzz online, according to new UK research looking at ‘who’s who’ of the online world.

According to online identity firm Garlik – who have recently launched QDOS, a system which measures an individual’s digital status it’s musicians making the loudest noise in the digital space with nine comprising the top 10 most digitally prolific personalities in the UK.

The study found high profile figures like Lilly Allen and Ozzy Osbourne have been trumped by lesser known singer-songwriter Imogen Heap, who came top of the list.

The one exception is Richard Dawkins, a popular science writer, who with a QDOS score of 8703, holds the number three spot.

A review of the top 50 most prolific celebrities sees former Prime Minister Tony Blair coming in at number 12, a full 13 places ahead of his successor Gordon Brown, with former Conservative PM Margaret Thatcher ranking at number 33.

David Beckham (in at number 28) is the only footballer to make the list while fame hungry Posh is nowhere to be seen in the top 50.

Tom Ilube, CEO, Garlik said: “In the world of celebrity, where some people will do anything to stay in the limelight, the online world is becoming the new place to be seen. Those who do not embrace the internet risk being left behind while digitally savvy celebs such as Lily Allen use the internet to promote themselves to best effect.”

“The same can be said for all of us looking to promote ourselves – digital status allows us to understand and therefore manage how we are perceived.  We all need to take control of our digital profiles to ensure that what others see of us online is how we want to be portrayed.”

Despite the perception that social networking sites are the domain of the young, the top 50 digerati is dominated by silver surfers, with 19 celebrities on the list, such as Elton John and Sting, aged fifty plus.

A QDOS score is comprised of four main components – popularity, impact, activity and individuality.

Each component is scored separately and these are combined to form a total QDOS score. Popularity measures the number of people one engages with online and the size of their personal network, impact is based on the number of people who listen when an individual blogs/posts online, activity comprises the total of one’s digital activity including shopping, blogging, banking, chatting etc, and individuality is how unique one is in the digital world based on their name, age and lifestyle.

Right to reply: The New Twitter – a sticky, revenue-rich service that blitzes the third-party apps
Twitter is now a 'destination website' and that means it is gunning for Facebook, but cleverly avoiding a direct dogfight. It’s more an information network than a social network and so is offering much, much more. Tanya Goodin, CEO of search and social conversion agency Tamar comments…
