The busiest online shopping minute: 1.31pm next Monday

The busiest online shopping minute will be at 1:31 PM on the 8th of December, according to payment card issuer Retail Recisions (ReD).

ReD expects to see online shoppers spend £980,865 in this one minute. On this day over £450 million goods will be sold with 60 percent of online shoppers being female.

Amongst the 30 million UK adults that shop online*, ReD is forecasting that volumes will rise by 42% on a like-for-like basis vs. 2007 though the Average Transaction Value in the United Kingdom will fall by 10%.

Items which are appearing on this year's Christmas list include iPhones, Laptops, Wii Games and perfume compared to last year’s Xbox 360, the Sony PS3, the iPod Nano and the Samsung U600 mobile phone.

“With the recent VAT cuts to help lead Britain out of recession ReD will be monitoring our real-time online data to see whether the British people go on a pre-Christmas spending spree, or simply remain cautious,” said Carl Clump, CEO of Retail Decisions.

Traditionally ReD’s data shows that Mondays are the busiest shopping days online in the run up to Christmas. The most lucrative UK moment online in history was at 1:09 PM on 10th December 2007 when it was estimated that UK shoppers spent £767,500 online in one single minute.

As a global leader in real-time card payment fraud prevention, ReD processes some 16 billion transactions annually, providing a unique perspective on sales, volumes and trends around the world.
