London mayor race heats up online

The race for London mayor is heating up ahead of election day tomorrow, with the Internet playing a bigger role in the process than ever before.

Internet research firm Hitwsie reveals that Boris Johnson’s website is the most visited out of all the London mayoral candidates, but Brian Paddick has generated the most interest on social networks.

Last week Hitwise analysed UK Internet traffic relating to the London Mayoral elections.

With only one day of campaigning left, Hitwise has provided its most recent data.

The chart below illustrates the daily Internet traffic to the three main candidates' official homepages up until yesterday.

Commenting on the results, Robin Goad, director of research at Hitwise UK, said: “Visits to websites do not equal votes but, as you can see, visits to all three candidates' websites have increased over the past week.”

Conservative Boris Johnson's page was the most popular yesterday, followed by the incumbent Mayor, Labour's Ken Livingstone, and then the Liberal Democrat candidate Brian Paddick.

As the chart below illustrates, Paddick remains ahead in terms of the amount of traffic received from social networks, but both Boris and Ken closed the gap last week.
