MySpace debuts application gallery

MySpace has launched an applications gallery, as the social network looks to regain lost ground with smaller rivals such as Facebook and Bebo.
Initially launched as a beta test in March, the new gallery lets MySpace users add a variety of applications to their profiles.
The gallery launches with more than 1000 applications available in a variety of categories, which users view all before applying them to their profiles.
The applications are similar to those offered by rival Facebook, such as a 'Graffiti Wall', 'Texas Hold 'Em Poker' and 'Music Video Playlists'.
The News Corp-owned firm is hoping the new applications will encourage users to spend more time using the social network, increasing ad revenue in the process.
An Application Gallery icon will appear at the top of each users’ homepage, while a ‘one-click access’ option lets users view and edit their applications.
Commenting on the launch, Chris DeWolfe, CEO and co-founder of MySpace, said: “The MySpace Application Gallery enables the most meaningful and diverse online experience available on the internet to-date.”
The move can be seen as reaction to the success of Facebook’s own developer platform, which launched in May 2007, and houses around 20,000 applications so far.
MySpace remains the most popular social network worldwide, with around 110,000 million active monthly users, compared with Facebook’s 64 million.
However, the company lags behind Facebook in the UK, which has 8.5 million UK members, compared with MySpace’s 5 million. Bebo, recently acquired by AOL, has around 4 million members. (Source: Nielsen//Netratings, Feb 2008).
