Channel 4 to launch Video on Demand service

The 4oD service, which launches to a UK audience this week, gives PC users 30-days to access repeats of current programmes such as Ramsay’s Kitchen Nightmares, Hollyoaks and 8 Out Of 10 Cats.

4oD will also open up the Channel 4 archives, making hundreds of hours of classic programmes available to download such as Queer As Folk, Trigger Happy TV and Drop The Dead Donkey.

4oD is available to subscribers of ntl Telewest and will be available on BT Vision at launch.

phunQube was involved in the project from the beginning and has continued involvement with the service.

The project involved functional design of the player for both PC-based and digital TV environments.

4oD was prototyped and tested with Channel 4 viewers and website users.

Through a series of functional design refinements and usability testing, phunQube worked with Channel 4’s internal teams and external design and technical agencies to ensure the service meet the broadcasters usability demands.

Sarah Rose, head of Video-on-Demand Channel 4 said: “As one of the first broadcasters in the world to launch a comprehensive video-on-demand service we needed to build much of the functionality from scratch. Working closely with phunQube we have developed a fantastic product we are all really proud of. The experience and advice of the phunQube team has been extremely helpful and we look forward to working with them in the future.”
