Starting today (1 November) the price cuts represent the first such move by any of the four major music companies.
Universal is dropping the prices it charges online retailers for 1,500 albums, although the final retail price consumers pay will still be determined by each online service, such as iTunes and Napster.
The cut-price albums are expected to sell for about EU6.99 and £5.49 reduced from EU9.99 and £7.99 respectively.
Max Hole, head of marketing for Universal Music's international division, said: “As the leading online record company, we are totally committed to expanding and developing the digital music market.
“The promise of the Internet has always been about making it easier for people to access music in new ways and at affordable prices, and that's what we are aiming to achieve."
