Launching on 6 September, the new ‘Tesco Direct’ service will initially sell some 8,000 non-food items, putting Tesco in direct completion with the likes of Amazon and Argos.
The new site will run alongside Tesco's food e-tailer Tesco.com, one which already generated sales worth £1bn last year.
A selection of the products sold on the Internet will also feature in a catalogue which will be distributed to two million Tesco customers.
Customers can also place orders in some Tesco stores and over the phone.
