Both the Wall Street Journal and the New York Post have reported that eBay was eyeing the firm as a means of expanding its presence into the telecoms industry.
The buy could also give eBay’s community of buyers and sellers an alternative method of communication.
According to the reports, which quote undisclosed sources close to the deal, the talks between the firms are ongoing.
eBay and Skype have so far declined to comment on the reports.
Skype offers software that lets users make free phone calls via the Internet rather than landlines. The firm has some 52 million registered users for its free service and 2 million users for its pay-calling service.
The Internet telephony market is hotting up, with Google, Yahoo, Microsoft and AOL all making recent moves into the market.
