The buy is seen as a good fit for Microsoft, as Teleo's service is already integrated with Microsoft products like Outlook and Internet Explorer.

Microsoft said it planned to merge Teleo's services into its products by the end of 2005. The software giant could also add "click-to-call" features to Outlook or Internet Explorer, allowing users to automatically call a phone number by clicking on it.

San Francisco-based Teleo also offers options to forward VoIP phone calls to a mobile phone or office number, or voicemail that can be emailed to the user.

Outbound calls from a computer to a phone number cost two cents per minute.

Microsoft is hoping the service will take a share of the booming Internet telophony market in the US.

Rival firms Google, AOL, Yahoo, and market leader Skype all offer similar services.
