Seattle-based Melodeo provides music to subscribers through its “Mobile Music Solution”, which resides directly on the user’s phone allowing them to shop, preview, purchase and download full-length music tracks.

The new deal will give Melodeo access to EMI’s catalogue, which will include tracks from music acts such as Athlete, Coldplay, Faith Evans, Gorillaz, Norah Jones, Kylie Minogue, Joss Stone and Robbie Williams.

Melodeo currently powers the mPlay service for the leading Spanish operator Telefonica Moviles Espana SA, Canadian operator Rogers Wireless and further major deals will be announced over the coming months.

Doug Lucas, vice president of digital development and distribution for EMI Music in Europe said: “Consumers are increasingly looking to download full tracks from their favourite artists to their mobile phone. This deal puts a music store full of EMI artists into the pockets of millions of people.”

As well as offering music from major companies, Melodeo also provides access to more specialist music, through a series of deals with European independent labels.

Duncan Ledwith, VP and European general manager at Melodeo, said: “Music is about variety. Existing mobile music services don’t recognise that music lovers may want more than the latest chart entries.

"By taking a new approach and working with both majors and independents Melodeo is meeting those needs.”
