Rhapsody takes on Napster with unlimited downloads offer

The US-based Rhapsody service is now giving its paying subscribers an unlimited number of tracks to download to their portable music players, from a catalogue of one million songs.

The service, currently only available in the US, uses a similar pricing model to the Napster-to-Go service launched earlier this year.

"Rhapsody To Go" will cost around $15 a month, which includes a subscription to the main Rhapsody service.

Only a few devices currently support the portable service, including models from hardware firms Creative and iriver.

Meanwhile, non-paying subscribers can listen to 25 songs from the Rhapsody library, but must be connected to the Internet while listening.

As they listen, the software will encourage users to sign up for the full service, and will display advertising.  US car firm Chrysler is among the first advertisers signed up to the service.
