RSS (Really Simple Syndication) is a format for syndicating online news and information sites.
Each RSS feed is a text document containing a list of content items. The text document contains the headline, description and link for content items available on a web site.
Despite existing for four years, RSS has only moved into the mainstream commercial Internet over the past year, as large news companies, such as the BBC and The Guardian began using RSS feeds.
Alexandra White, director of the AOP, said: "Concerns about spam have led to many people abandoning email as their preferred means of receiving news and information, in favour of RSS feeds.
“As the online publishing industry's representative body it was important for us to respond to the trend and offer this option for our members," White added.
To run the RSS feed, users need to install a news reader program. The reader will automatically update and display the new articles from the feeds selected by the reader.
