Tesco uses SMS to push car insurance

The service is the result of a deal with Parker’s car valuation text service, which will provide Tesco with the technology behind their “Parker’s SMS Price Check” service launched last year.

Working with online marketing agency Harvest Digital, Tesco Personal Finance will send buyers an SMS message encouraging them to call for a car insurance quote.

Potential car buyers can text the registration number and mileage of a car they are considering to Parker’s and receive a message back with model details and a mileage adjusted dealer price.

This will be followed by a text from Tesco Personal Finance detailing the insurance group the car is in and providing the telephone number to call for a quote. The service costs the user £1.50 per text. The message from Tesco Personal Finance will be free to receive.

Emma Wilson, client services director at Harvest Digital said: “Parker’s has been the trusted name for car prices for over thirty years.  This innovation means Tesco Personal Finance can leverage that trust just at the time when car buyers are considering a purchase.”

Parker’s has provided car pricing information offline for 33 years and online for five years.  The SMS price check covers all the cars in the UK and is designed to increase the accessibility, convenience and functionality of Parker’s used car valuations.

The service is marketed in the motoring and regional press as well as through affiliate deals with LOOT and Exchange & Mart.

Guest comment: No rival to the SMS text exists in the market today
SMS is the obvious “lowest common denominator” mobile marketing solution... yet critics still talk about apps and website and vouchers. Darren Daws, Managing Director at Txtlocal argues why SMS is still the best mobile marketing medium, even on smartphones.
