The firm launched three other phones, including two new camera phones.

The new W800 Walkman phones, available early in the third quarter this year, will have large memory, and be compatible with Apple's AAC format as wel as MP3 files. They were hinted at last month in Cannes.

The W800i Walkman mobile will come with with CD ripping software to transfer music to the phone - though no sign of iTunes compatibility as yet, a deal struck by Apple with Motorola recently.

It also features a 2 megapixel camera for quality and video record, 38 MB of memory expandable up to 2GB, and an FM radio.

Sony is banking that its world famous Walkman mobile music heritage will make the W800 a  serious contender in the digital music player market.

Battery life is a key consideration for music players, so Sony Ericsson has given the phone a 15 hour life if the phone  is switched on, or up to 30 hours if it isn’t.

Weighing in at less than 100g, the W800 also offers a 2 Megapixel  camera with autofocus, picture light, active lens cover and digital still camera interface.

The phone will come with cables to play through a stereo hi-fi, but Sony Ericsson is hoping its Bluetooth Media Center MMV-200 device will take off.

This enables mobile content to be played through a TV or a Hi-Fi, the idea being that - like the Apple iPod iPhoto - people will want to share their music and images with others.

The MMV-200 several kinds of memory cards, as well as the proprietary Sony Memory Stick. The MMV-200 will be available in Q2 2005.

Sony Ericsson announced a 2 Megapixel camera phone, the K750, an entry-level camera phone, the K300, and a J300 phone which has a 3D gaming engine, both aimed at the youth market.

Sony Ericsson's latest launches come just as arch-rival Nokia launched three new phones today for the forthcoming CeBIT technology fair, aimed at the hunger for camera phones and music, joining six new phones in the last two weeks.

Nokia said the 6230i model with a 1.3-megapixel camera would be available in the second quarter. The phone will also have a built-in music player.

Nokia is working with Loudeye and Microsoft to include Windows Audio Player in its handsets while Motorola has launched phones incorporating Apple's iTunes format.
