Time Warner, Comcast, Sony and Liberty Media have been connected with TiVo as potential buyers, but leading the pack in the rumour stakes is Apple.
TiVo's market capitalisation - around $300m - makes it ideal for takeover by a larger media or technology firm. Neither Apple nor TiVo were available for comment.
The share price has since dipped, but remains above level it was at prior to the rumours spreading about the possible buyout.
The company's PVR technology allows viewers to record up to 14 hours of programming and, similar to Sky+ in the UK, live footage can be paused and rewound and viewers can also skip ad breaks.
TiVo's subscriber numbers grew to more than 3m in January, after it reduced the price of its technology to $100.
