Figures released from people finder and directory enquiry website 192.com reveal that 60% more people go online at Christmas to look for loved one than at any other time of year.

The first week of December when people are likely to be sending out Christmas cards is the most popular week for searching.

The firm said 20% more people go online searching for old friends and relatives every year. The company has seen a significant increase in searches this year compared to the same time last December.

Jean Parodi, director of marketing for 192.com, said: “Christmas is a time for celebration and coming together. It’s no surprise that so many people will want to reconnect with long lost relatives or out of touch friends. What is refreshing is that they are doing this online.

“In fact, we have given this service to charities at Christmas with great success in the past. Lost and homeless people have found friends or family to look after them at Christmas within hours of using it,” Parodi added.

"192.com":http://www.192.com/homeless.cfm is also offering its services for free over the Christmas period, from 24th December at 10am until the 3rd January at 4pm. Users can enter user name christmas@192.com and password “santa” to use the free service.
