BT launches ministry of fun

The move follows BT’s launch last week of a new online music store powered by the white label technology service Blueprint.

The divison, dubbed “BT Entertainment”, is set to launch on 1 January 2005. It will incorporate services such as BT’s content platform business “Rich Media”, Click & Buy and BT Learning Centre.

The CEO will be Andrew Burke, currently director of value added services at BT Retail.

Burke was previously CEO of venture capital fund eVerger, and was the founder and CEO of ISP LineOne. Burke also helped establish News International’s initial internet presence in 1995.

Dan Marks, president of Universal Studios Networks UK, is to join BT Entertainment early in the New Year to lead BT's future interests in video-over-broadband services.

Pierre Danon, BT Retail chief executive, said: "Our customers are telling us that they want more, that fast access alone is not enough, and they are demanding more entertainment and communications services.”

BT has long harboured ambitions to enter the entertainment and broadcasting arena. Earliy this year there was industry speculaltion that it may purchase Home Choice, the London-based ADSL network which delivers TV over broadband.
