Yahoo! mobilises search

The service launched on Yahoo!'s wireless Internet portal on several major carriers across the US.

Consumers can access the service on a data-enabled mobile device by going to Yahoo!'s Mobile Internet site or typing in mobile.yahoo.com.

Along with offering local information, image and web search, the mobile service will offer "Search Shortcuts" that enable quick access to information, including weather, stock quotes, sport scores and flight information.

Dan Rosensweig, chief operating officer for Yahoo! said: "The launch of Yahoo! Search for mobile is a crucial step in providing consumers with a new and powerful point of access to our search products.”

Earlier in October, Google launched a test service in the US that allows people to use mobile phones or handheld devices to access Google's Web search via SMS.
