As with Yell.com, users will be able to search by business name, business type, location or carry out a more tailored selection from a list of the most popular business categories, such as “Days and Nights Out” and “Gifts and Shopping”.

The service also offers full colour street maps and walking and driving directions from the users' location.

Yell.com mobile is compatible with a number of colour screen handsets currently on the market and operates on four major UK networks – O2, Orange, T-Mobile and Vodafone.

The service uses the Java technology to download and store a search application on the handset. The application enables users to enter search requests and connect directly to Yell.com’s business database.

Eddie Cheng, eBusiness director at Yell, said: “Yell.com mobile is a unique service, the most advanced of its kind currently available in Europe. The revolutionary application gives mobile users full access to Yell.com’s business information whilst they’re on the move. Once downloaded, the application sits on the mobile handset with only requested data being transmitted over the air.”

Yell.com mobile can be obtained by sending an SMS with the word ‘mobile’ to 80248. A link is returned that enables a user to download the service in seconds.

Once downloaded to a handset, users are able to search for business information by either entering a search request or searching by category.

Once a business has been selected from the search results and the name, number and address displayed, users are offered access to three further ‘premium’ services, each charged at 25p per access. These include maps, directions and business details.

Twitter is now a 'destination website' and that means it is gunning for Facebook, but cleverly avoiding a direct dogfight. It’s more an information network than a social network and so is offering much, much more. Tanya Goodin, CEO of search and social conversion agency Tamar comments…

Guest comment: No rival to the SMS text exists in the market today
SMS is the obvious “lowest common denominator” mobile marketing solution... yet critics still talk about apps and website and vouchers. Darren Daws, Managing Director at Txtlocal argues why SMS is still the best mobile marketing medium, even on smartphones.
