Cable and Wireless challenges BT with Bulldog buy

Bulldog is currently one of the few companies offering LLU (Local Loop Unbundling) other than BT, installing its own equipment in its telephone exchanges.
The buy means Cable & Wireless can create broadband packages that are totally independent from BT Wholesale's pricing strategies.
Francesco Caio, Cable & Wireless chief executive, said: "We believe that local loop unbundling will provide selective opportunities driven by customer demand to expand the reach of our services and enable us to provide a differentiated offering."
Earlier this month, BT's cut charges by 70% to rival ISPs for using its LLU exchanges to connect to their customers, following pressure from rival ISPs.
Bulldog was established in May 2000. After two years development activity, including the installation of its equipment in BT's exchanges, it launched commercial service in late 2002. At 31 December 2003, Bulldog had net assets of £1.6m. Cable & Wireless has made the purchase through a wholly owned subsidiary.
