Wippit bags BMG agreement

The deal will enable the London-based firm, which signed an agreement with EMIto strengthen its EMI-licensed download content, will enable it to make BMG music content available to subscribers in the UK & Europe. Artists include Westlife, Christina Aguilera, Outkast, Dido and Pink.

The Wippit subscription service, which costs £30 a year, enables users to listen to music from their PC and burn a limited number of CDs or transfer music to portable players.

However, unlike the EMI partnership, Wippit customers will only be able to access BMG content via a central server and will not be able to share it on a peer-to-peer level.

The deal with EMI enabled Wippit to start offering EMI tracks on an 'a la carte' basis through a soon-to-be-launched pay-per-download service, but it is unclear whether the BMG tracks will also be made available via this same service.

At the time, CEO Paul Myers told Netimperative that it had signed an agreement with another of the top five labels and would make the announcement by the end of the month. He said Wippit was also in contract discussions with two further major labels, leaving "only one to go".

Wippit said that it now offers 175,000 music tracks from over 200 record labels.
