DomainWatch, which was launched to coincide with the e-crime congress taking place in London this week, allows companies to monitor new domain registrations and be alerted to any addresses that could be used as part of a phishing attack, for example, suspicious registrations might contain the name of a bank somewhere in the domain name.
Phishing is the name given to a particular type of scam, where bogus emails are made to look like they come from a bank or ISP and ask users to input online banking or credit card details. The word comes from the use of increasingly sophisticated lures to encourage internet surfers to give up their account information, such as faked web pages.
Customers of DomainWatch can set up their own parameters so that they are alerted to suspicious-looking address regsitrations, allowing them to take pre-emptive measures.
In addition, DomainWatch monitors and evaluates email traffic for signs of phishing.
A number of UK banks have recently suffered phishing attacks, including Egg, Barclays and Natwest, and therecently predicted that UK ISPs could be the next major target after an increase in the number of attacks on US ISPs.
