However, unlike Microsoft and Google, which chose to provide news services tailored to specific regions and countries, AOL is much more US focused.
As a result, it has signed agreements with USAToday.com and NYTimes.com to flesh out its serious news coverage while looking to Comedy Central and HBO for lighter items.
The AOL site will now carry clips from Comedy Central's Jon Stewart and video and audio commentary from HBO's Bill Maher, along with some newspaper cartoonists.
The company has also followed Google's and Yahoo's lead by updating its search engine so that the AOL News Search is integrated into the main AOL search.
It will also begin carrying features next month in addition to columns from high profile individuals including former White House spokesman Mike McCurry; the National Review's Jonah Goldberg and anti-tax activist Grover Norquist.
In comparison Yahoo News boasts more than 100 partners, featuring content from The Washington Post, New York Times, USA Today, U S News & World Report, Financial Times, National Public Radio, the Los Angeles Times and Chicago Tribune. Video clips come courtesy of the Associated Press and Reuters.
Unlike Yahoo News, the AOL service will not be free and will only be available to AOL subscribers, who number 24.7m in the US.
AOL News was ranked the number one news site in October with 24m monthly users, followed by MSNBC with 22m, Yahoo News with 21m and CNN with 20.9m, according to ComScore Media Metrix.
