The company generated £555.2m in revenues during the three months to 30 September, up marginally on the previous quarter, helping it to stem losses. It reported a net loss for the period of £117.3m, with underlying profits up from £173.8m to £201.4m.

The cable network managed to eke more money out of its subscribers, with ARPU up to £41.43, from £41.04 in the second-quarter. It also boosted the number of overall subscribers by 56,200 and is now in more than 2.8 million households.

NTL said three out of ten of its subscribers had now adopted its broadband services, although many of these users may be signed to to its limited 128Kbps service.

Nevertheless, the company has been adding about 100,000 new broadband customers per quarter and claims 864,000 'high-speed' internet users. According to these figures, NTL now accounts for more than a third of the overall broadband market in the UK.

However, despite the company's improved performance, it will be unhappy with the rise in customer churn, which increased to 14.4%, a fairly steep rise on the 12.9% it reported in the second-quarter.
