Home entertainment "veteran" Heather Lawson joined Video Island this week as its VP of commercial and will focus on the supply chain and distribution channels, as well as on partnerships and helping the company improve its services.

Lawson was previously responsible for buying, merchandise planning, distribution and space planning across Blockbuster's 750 stores.

She "needed no persuasion" to join Video Island, which recently received £2.1m in funding from Benchmark Capital and Index Ventures. The firm has developed automated distribution systems and hopes to become the market leader in Europe.

Video Island co-founder and CEO Saul Klein said: "Heather's appointment brings us huge complementary skills to the management team - we now have expertise across e-commerce, on, offline and multi-channel retailing."

Video Island launched in September and charges users a fixed monthly fee to access an unlimited DVD rental service, with 12,000 titles to choose from, no fines and no return dates. Subscribers can hold up to five DVDs at any one time.
