Amazon and Microsoft in desktop pact

Scheduled to launch in late-Autumn, the 'Amazon.com Research Services for Microsoft Office System' tool will be available for download for free from the Office Marketplace. The initiative makes use of the Microsoft Research Task Pane, a feature in MS Office 2003 that can integrate web services into applications such as Word, Excel and PowerPoint.

MS Office users will be able to access information on Amazon as well as going on to make purchases, without needing to open up a browser window, or leave their document, email or presentation. The two companies said they will develop the MS Office tool based on feedback and suggestions from users.

The idea behind the joint development project was simply to make it more convenient for MS users to access Amazon, by using Amazon Web Services, which is typically used by companies that want to integrate the company's product inventory into websites or applications.

The Amazon Web Services software developers kit has been downloaded 35,000 times since it launched in July 2002.
