O2 teams with Bango for content distribution

The O2 Revolution programme helps content developers and providers distribute their applications to O2 subscribers, but those signing up to the initiative can now reach customers on other networks via the Bango.net platform.

By simultaneously registering with O2 Revolution and Bango, developers can access all of the UK networks as well as others located overseas. Bango manages the billing for mobile content across more than 80 networks around the world.

Users can pay for rich mobile content such as Java games in a variety of ways, including credit or debit cards and reverse billing, where the amount appears on their mobile phone bill.

Bango chief alliances officer, Anil Malhotra, said the deal will "maximise the market reach and revenue opportunity for all mobile content providers" while giving customers much greater choice.

O2 Revolution encourages developers to create new services and products, including Java, WAP and SMS applications, which it delivers and provides the billing platform for. It then returns "a significant proportion" of these revenues to the developer.

Bango takes a small cut for processing payments and claims that more than one million individuals access content and applications via its platform every month.

The O2 Revolution programme supports a wide range of handsets though the operator said there is currently "a requirement for additional Motorola and Samsung content". Annual membership costs £750 for developers, who can submit up to five applications for distribution.
