Online betting up at William Hill

The company generated more than £284m in bets at its online sportsbook and casino in the six months to 1 July. This was an improvement of £87m on last year - its interactive division now accounts for more than 10% of group business.

But the gaming group said the lack of a major football championship during the summer, as well as the difficulties associated with accessing certain international markets had meant limited growth.

Nevertheless, customer numbers at its online sportsbook increased by 7,000 to 137,000, while its casino attracted 15,000 new users, taking overall numbers up to 58,000. The company said growth in the casino unit was "exceptionally strong" following the launch of williamhillpoker.com in January.

William Hill plans to introduce new casino software in the coming months and will also manage various back office tasks in-house, in a bid to improve margins. It currently outsources much of its back office requirement to third party companies.

At group level, turnover leapt by 72% to £2.7bn, pushing profits up by 27% to £102m.
